Kudos to you if you’ve seen this movie :) one of the best.
There are people who haven’t seen this movie?!
AHSAJDHAKJ. This was one of my absolute favourites when I was little! Still is!
Fun Fact - Christopher Lee voiced King Haggard in the English and German versions. Can you imagine THAT voice speaking German? :’D
I did know that! And apparently Christopher Lee showed up with a copy of the book full of notes and highlighting, because he felt so passionately about the story he wanted to make sure there were lines that didn’t get cut from the movie.
My siblings and I used to play Last Unicorn all the time. It involved taping pencils to our foreheads. IDEK. We were odd children.
“Never run from anything immortal. It attracts their attention.”
There are certain movies from my childhood that I feel really left a pretty distinct impression on me, and probably in a lot of ways have shaped me as a storyteller (or at least, how I want to tell stories or what I look for in other stories) and this is definitely one of them. Along with Secret of Nimh and Ringing Bell/Chirin’s Bell and Neverending Story or Flight of Dragons. I feel like those took pretty solid root in me as a kid.
The last unicorn, aside from forever embedding in my mind that what was quoted above is true of immortal creatures, probably opened a lot of curiosity in me about the exploration of human emotions by creatures unfamiliar with those feelings, coming to terms with and perhaps being forever changed by them, because certain changes cannot be easily undone. (“I am a little afraid to go home. I have been mortal, and some part of me is mortal yet. I am no longer like the others; for no unicorn was ever born who could regret. But now I do. I regret.”) Which probably also accounts partly for why I love and find myself fascinated by Justice in Awakening, and him dealing with Kristoff’s memories, and why I feel a little cheated by his appearance in DA2 because you don’t quite see enough of him and his struggle and his experiences, and him dealing with this live, raw emotion from the part of him that is Anders and a body that feels pain and bleeds and isn’t a lifeless corpse. For the majority, Anders (though yes, they are merged and there will always be overlap) is the predominant mouthpiece, but Anders is more human than spirit, and while I like Anders, I miss that. I miss that potential story that happens but is not told to us because it happens somewhere else.
I HAVE NEVER MET ANYONE WHO’S EVEN HEARD OF RINGING BELL BEFORE OMG. Are we the same person?! Honestly! Your list of formative movies are the exact same as mine. EXACT SAME. Like, I had all those movies on VHS and watched them until they were no longer watchable. (Except Ringing Bell we just rented from the video store over and over and over AND OVER AND I SOBBED LIKE A SOBBING THING EVERY TIME. My mom almost banned the rental of Ringing Bell in our house because we were so disgustingly distressed when we watched it. I feel seriously emotional thinking about it right now, even though it’s been ages since I’ve seen it.)
AND YOUR THOUGHTS ABOUT JUSTICE/KRISTOFF VS JUSTICE/ANDERS. ASDHFDJFS. Yes! I felt a little cheated for the same reason you mention here. I wanted so much to know more about that story, that interaction, that blend of man and spirit, mortal and immortal.
All this and the letter about poutine? I think I might be harboring a bit of a crush <3 Hee!

He did this for Lord of the Rings too. That man is such a fan, he is ONE OF US, guys.
